Dutch markets (the weekly markt) are great for practising. Useful phrases: ‘Een kilo appels, alstublieft’ (a kilo of apples), ‘Twee ons …’ (200 grams of …), ‘Is het rijp?’ (is it ripe?). Note de ui (onion) also lets you practise that tricky ‘ui’ sound!

'Fruit' (fruit) and 'groente' (vegetables). Common ones: appel (apple), peer (pear), wortel (carrot), aardappel (potato), ui (onion), tomaat (tomato).
Use 'Een kilo …, alstublieft' (a kilo of …) or 'Twee ons …' (200 grams). Ask 'Is het rijp?' (is it ripe?). Dutch markets are friendly places to practise.
'Aardappel' — literally 'earth-apple'. Informally, fries are 'patat' or 'friet' depending on the region.
