What is the Inburgering exam?

Frequently asked questions

What level of Dutch is needed for Inburgering?

Under the 2021 Integration Act, the standard target is CEFR B1. An A2 route exists for those who cannot reasonably reach B1. Your DUO/gemeente letter specifies your personal requirement.

How long do I have to pass?

Typically three years from when your integration obligation begins. Extensions are possible in specific circumstances. Missing the deadline can lead to fines and affect your residency.

Can I prepare on my own?

Yes — many people self-study to A2/B1 using apps, podcasts and AI conversation practice, then take official mock exams. A course adds structure if you’re short on time or discipline.

Is the speaking part the hardest?

For most people, yes — it’s the skill you can’t fake. Daily speaking practice (tutor, tandem partner, or AI conversation trainer) is the single best investment for passing.
