Dutch for Healthcare Workers
Nurses, caregivers and doctors need Dutch twice: once on paper for BIG registration, and once for real at the bedside. Dutch Daily trains both. We rebuilt around 50 standard care routines as language training, from the morning wash to the medication round, and wrapped them in AI roleplays that end in a real exam.
Why healthcare Dutch is different
Medical Dutch is high-stakes: a misunderstood pain score affects patient safety. Beyond general fluency you need care vocabulary, patient communication, colleague handovers and written reporting. Textbooks for “zorgtaal” exist, but a book cannot listen to you speak, and speaking is the skill the ward runs on.
How we built the Zorg Academy
Every Dutch care institution trains the same standard routines: helping someone wash and dress, safe transfers, the medication round, wound care, the handover. We wrote language training around 50 of those care moments. Each one starts from a single question: which Dutch do you need to do this well and safely with a real person?
The answer became, per routine: a spoken dialogue at real ward speed, the key sentences you say at each moment, the vocabulary in Dutch, English and Portuguese, the safety moments where language really matters (asking consent, announcing what you will do, checking pain), and writing tasks in ECD style. A cliënt in our training complains about a cold room, refuses to get out of bed, or asks why you start with their weak arm. You respond. That is the training.
Four steps from reading to exam
Each care routine has a conversation ladder. You climb it at your own pace.
1 · Read and choose
A full care conversation. The cliënt speaks, you choose the right response from three options and read it out loud. The spiekbrief (cheat sheet) with the key steps sits next to it. No microphone pressure yet.
2 · Guided session
A spoken conversation with a coach. Stuck for words? You hear “Misschien kan je zeggen…” and you try again. Training wheels on, but you are really speaking.
3 · Guided roleplay
A real conversation with the AI cliënt. You steer, the spiekbrief stays on screen to glance at, and afterwards you get a full report: what went well, what to fix, with the transcript.
4 · Exam
The same roleplay, no spiekbrief, no briefing. Stricter grading. This checks whether you can do it independently, the way a real shift will ask you to.
Four exam skills per routine
Alongside the conversation ladder, every routine trains the four skills the Dutch language exams test, in care context.
Spreken
Situation fragments: the cliënt is cold, refuses care, gets emotional. You speak your response; AI grades language, tone and whether your answer fits the care situation.
Luisteren
Colleague handovers, family voicemails and care conversations at natural speed, with questions that test real understanding, including the numbers and times nurses must never mishear.
Schrijven
ECD reporting: you write the report for the care file and AI grades grammar, care vocabulary, structure and objectivity. “Meneer was chagrijnig” costs points; “meneer gaf pijnscore vier aan” earns them.
Begrijpend lezen
Stories and texts from care practice with B1-level questions that require inference: why did the caregiver choose this, what is the best response, which sentence proves it.
The paper side: BIG registration
To work in Dutch healthcare you register in the BIG-register. Nurses prove Dutch at B1 (Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I), doctors at B2+, and since January 2024 you submit the language certificate directly with your application. Dutch Daily trains those exact exams: 110 A2 exercises and 85 Staatsexamen NT2 Programma II exercises across all four skills. Start with these guides:

Life in the Netherlands is more than your shift. Frequently asked questions
What level of Dutch do nurses need in the Netherlands?
B1 for BIG registration, proven with the Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I across all four skills. Doctors and dentists need B2+. Many employers prefer B2 from nurses in daily practice.
What is the Zorg Academy exactly?
Dutch Daily’s healthcare module: around 50 standard care routines rebuilt as language training, each with reading dialogues, listening, ECD writing tasks, speaking fragments and a four-step AI roleplay ladder that ends in an exam without help.
Is this better than an NT2 zorgtaal textbook?
A book cannot hear you speak, correct your pronunciation or grade your ECD report. Books are fine for reading practice; the skills that decide your shift (speaking, listening, writing under time pressure) need interaction and feedback.
In which languages is the support?
The care vocabulary and translation help come in Dutch, English and Portuguese, and the training itself works for speakers of any language. Filipino, Indian, Indonesian, South African, Surinamese and EU professionals all follow the same Dutch track.
