What are Lidwoorden?

In Dutch, there are words called lidwoorden, or articles. They help us know more about nouns. There are three main articles in Dutch: de, het, and een.

Types of Lidwoorden

  • De: This is the definite article used for common gender nouns.
  • Het: This is the definite article used for neuter gender nouns.
  • Een: This is the indefinite article used for both common and neuter nouns.

When to Use Each Article

Article When to Use Example
De For common gender nouns de auto (the car)
Het For neuter gender nouns het boek (the book)
Een For any noun when you do not specify een huis (a house)

Examples

  • De hond (the dog)
  • Het meisje (the girl)
  • Een stoel (a chair)
