What are Koppelwerkwoorden?
Koppelwerkwoorden are Dutch linking verbs. They connect the subject of a sentence to a description or state. The most common linking verbs are: zijn (to be), worden (to become), blijven (to stay), blijken (to turn out), lijken (to seem), and schijnen (to shine).
How to use Koppelwerkwoorden
You use a koppelwerkwoord to describe a subject. This is usually followed by a noun or an adjective.
- Zijn: Hij is een leraar. (He is a teacher.)
- Worden: Zij wordt gelukkig. (She becomes happy.)
- Blijven: Wij blijven vrienden. (We stay friends.)
- Blijken: Het blijkt waar. (It turns out to be true.)
- Lijken: Jij lijkt moe. (You seem tired.)
- Schijnen: Het schijnt dat het regent. (It seems that it is raining.)
Tips
Remember, the koppelwerkwoorden do not show action. They only link the subject with more information about it.
