Using English Verbs in Dutch

In Dutch, we often use English verbs. Sometimes, we change them slightly. This lesson focuses on some English verbs: leasen, racen, and timen.

1. Leasen

‘Leasen’ means to lease something, like a car or an apartment. In Dutch, it is used just like the English verb.

  • Ik leasen een auto. (I lease a car.)
  • Wij leasen een appartement. (We lease an apartment.)

2. Racen

‘Racen’ refers to racing, especially sports. It is also a direct use of the English verb.

  • Hij racet snel. (He races fast.)
  • Wij racen tegen elkaar. (We race against each other.)

3. Timen

‘Timen’ means to time something, like a race or an event.

  • Ik timen de wedstrijd. (I time the match.)
  • Zij timen het project. (They time the project.)
