What is the Meewerkend Voorwerp?

The meewerkend voorwerp is called the indirect object in English. It shows to whom or for whom an action is done. In simple words, it tells us who gets the benefit of the action.

How to Identify it?

  • It often answers the questions: aan wie? (to whom?) or voor wie? (for whom?).

Examples:

  • Ik geef de boeken aan mijn vriend. (I give the books to my friend.)
  • Zij koopt een cadeau voor haar moeder. (She buys a gift for her mother.)
  • Hij vertelt een verhaal aan de kinderen. (He tells a story to the children.)

How to Use it in a Sentence?

When using the meewerkend voorwerp, remember that it usually comes right after the direct object (which answers wat? or what?). For example:

Sentence Direct Object Indirect Object
Ik geef de bal aan mijn broer. de bal (the ball) mijn broer (my brother)
Zij schrijft een brief voor haar vriendin. een brief (a letter) haar vriendin (her friend)

Try to find the meewerkend voorwerp in sentences you hear or read. Ask yourself: To whom? or For whom? is the action being done?
