What is the Stem of a Verb?
In Dutch, the ‘stem’ or ‘base’ of a verb is the part of the verb you start with before adding endings. It is important for forming the correct verb tense.
How to Find the Stem
To find the stem of a regular verb, you take the infinitive form (which usually ends with -en) and remove the -en part.
Examples of Verb Stems
- werken (to work) → werk (stem)
- leren (to learn) → leer (stem)
- spelen (to play) → speel (stem)
Using the Stem
Once you have the stem, you can add different endings to create the present tense, past tense, and more. For example:
| Verb | Stem | Present Tense |
|---|---|---|
| werken | werk | ik werk (I work) |
| leren | leer | jij leert (you learn) |
| spelen | speel | wij spelen (we play) |
Remember!
Finding the stem is the first step in mastering Dutch verbs. Keep practicing with different verbs, and soon it will become easy!
