Introduction

In Dutch, just like in English, we use capital letters (hoofdletters) and small letters (kleine letters) to show the beginning of sentences, names, and special words. Let’s learn when to use them!

When to Use Capital Letters

  • At the beginning of a sentence.
  • For names of people.
  • For names of places.
  • For titles of books and movies.
  • For days of the week and months.

Examples

  • Begin van een zin: De hond is groot. (The dog is big.)
  • Naam van een persoon: Johan heeft een auto. (Johan has a car.)
  • Naam van een plaats: Ik ga naar Amsterdam. (I am going to Amsterdam.)
  • Titel van een boek: Het is een boek van Harry Potter. (It is a book by Harry Potter.)
  • Dagen van de week: Vandaag is het maandag. (Today is Monday.)

When to Use Small Letters

  • In the middle of a sentence, except for names.
  • For adjectives (small letters, unless they are part of a name).
  • For general nouns and verbs.

Examples

  • In het midden van een zin: De hond speelt met een bal. (The dog plays with a ball.)
  • Algemene zelfstandige naamwoorden: Ik zie een kat. (I see a cat.)
