Understanding Plurals in Dutch

In Dutch, many nouns become plural by adding -en at the end. This can sometimes be tricky, but once you get the hang of it, it’s quite simple!

How to Form the Plural

  • If a noun ends with a vowel or a consonant, you usually just add -en. (If there are exceptions, we will learn them later!)
  • Always remember: the plural of a noun indicates that there is more than one.

Examples of Nouns Ending in -en

Singular Plural
de tafel de tafels (the tables)
de vriend de vrienden (the friends)
het boek de boeken (the books)
de appel de appels (the apples)

Practice Makes Perfect!

Try forming plurals on your own! Remember to add -en to the singular form of the nouns!
