Understanding Plurals in Dutch
In Dutch, many nouns form their plural by adding -s. This is similar to English, where we also add -s to make nouns plural. Hereβs how it works:
- Singular: This is when we talk about one item.
- Plural: This is when we talk about more than one item.
How to form the plural
To create the plural of nouns that end in a consonant, you generally add -s at the end. Letβs look at some examples:
| Singular | Plural |
|---|---|
| boek (book) | boeken (books) |
| fiets (bicycle) | fietsen (bicycles) |
| huis (house) | huizen (houses) |
| stof (dust) | stoffen (dusts) |
Keep in Mind
Not all nouns follow this rule exactly. Sometimes, nouns may change more than just by adding -s. But for many common words, remember to add -s for the plural!
