What are Conjunctions?

In Dutch, we use conjunctions (voegwoorden) to connect words or sentences. They are very important in making our sentences clear.

Common Conjunctions

  • en: meaning ‘and’
  • maar: meaning ‘but’
  • want: meaning ‘because’
  • omdat: meaning ‘because’ (used to introduce a new clause)

Using Conjunctions

Here are examples of how to use these conjunctions:

  • Ik vind koffie lekker en thee ook. (I like coffee and tea too.)
  • Het is koud maar ik ga naar buiten. (It is cold but I am going outside.)
  • Hij studeert hard want hij wil slagen. (He studies hard because he wants to pass.)
  • Ik blijf thuis omdat het regent. (I stay home because it is raining.)

Remember!

Conjunctions help us connect ideas smoothly. Try to use them in your sentences!
