Understanding Plurals in Dutch
In Dutch, many nouns become plural by adding -en at the end. This can sometimes be tricky, but once you get the hang of it, itβs quite simple!
How to Form the Plural
- If a noun ends with a vowel or a consonant, you usually just add -en. (If there are exceptions, we will learn them later!)
- Always remember: the plural of a noun indicates that there is more than one.
Examples of Nouns Ending in -en
| Singular | Plural |
|---|---|
| de tafel | de tafels (the tables) |
| de vriend | de vrienden (the friends) |
| het boek | de boeken (the books) |
| de appel | de appels (the apples) |
Practice Makes Perfect!
Try forming plurals on your own! Remember to add -en to the singular form of the nouns!
