What is the Present Participle?

The present participle in Dutch is used to describe actions that are happening right now. It often ends in ‘end’, like ‘lopend’ (walking) or ‘fietsend’ (cycling). We use it to show an ongoing action.

How to Form the Present Participle

To make the present participle, you usually take the verb and add ‘-end’ at the end.

  • For example:
  • lopen (to walk) → lopend (walking)
  • fietsen (to cycle) → fietsend (cycling)
  • spelen (to play) → spelend (playing)

Usage of Present Participle

The present participle can be used in several ways:

  • To describe ongoing actions:
Hij is lopend naar de winkel. (He is walking to the store.)
  • To create adjectival phrases:
De fietsend jongen is snel. (The cycling boy is fast.)
  • In combination with other verbs:
Ik zie hem spelend in de tuin. (I see him playing in the garden.)
