What are Wederkerende Voornaamwoorden?

Wederkerende voornaamwoorden are reflexive pronouns in Dutch. They are used when the subject and the object of the sentence are the same. In English, this is like saying ‘myself’, ‘yourself’, or ‘himself’.

Common Wederkerende Voornaamwoorden

  • me (myself)
  • je (yourself)
  • zich (himself/herself/itself)

Using Wederkerende Voornaamwoorden

We use these pronouns when someone is doing something to themselves. Here are some examples:

  • Ik was me (I wash myself).
  • Jij kleedt je aan (You dress yourself).
  • Hij verzorgt zich (He takes care of himself).

How to Form Sentences

The basic structure is:

Subject Verb Reflexive Pronoun
Ik was me
Jij kleedt aan je
Hij zorgt zich

Tips

  • Always make sure the reflexive pronoun matches the subject.
  • Practice by creating your own sentences.
