Introduction to Leestekens

In Dutch, punctuation marks (leestekens) help us understand sentences better. They show us where to pause and how to read sentences. Let’s learn about the most common ones: the point (.), comma (,), and question mark (?).

The Point (Punt)

  • Used to end a sentence.

Example: Ik hou van chocolade. (I love chocolate.)

The Comma (Komma)

  • Used to separate words or phrases in a list.
  • Used before ‘maar’, ‘want’, and ‘dus’ in a sentence.

Example: Ik hou van chocolade, ijs, en taart. (I love chocolate, ice cream, and cake.)

Example: Ik hou van chocolade, maar ik moet op mijn dieet letten. (I love chocolate, but I have to watch my diet.)

The Question Mark (Vraagteken)

  • Used at the end of a question.

Example: Hou je van chocolade? (Do you love chocolate?)

Conclusion

Using the right punctuation is important for clear communication. Practice using points, commas, and question marks in your sentences.
