Introduction
In Dutch, we often use the words ‘als’ and ‘dan’ to compare things. They are similar to the English words ‘as’ and ‘than’. Understanding when to use each one is very important!
‘Als’ Usage
We use ‘als’ when we want to say ‘as’ in a comparison or to give a condition.
- Example: Hij is zo groot als ik. (He is as tall as I am.)
- Example: Als je komt, dan gaan we beginnen. (If you come, then we will start.)
‘Dan’ Usage
We use ‘dan’ primarily to mean ‘than’, especially in comparisons.
- Example: Zij is groter dan ik. (She is taller than I am.)
- Example: Dit boek is beter dan dat boek. (This book is better than that book.)
Key Differences
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| als | as, if | Ik werk als een professional. (I work as a professional.) |
| dan | than | Dit is moeilijker dan dat. (This is harder than that.) |
Practice Makes Perfect
Keep practicing these comparisons! Remember, ‘als’ is like ‘as’ and ‘dan’ is like ‘than’. You will get it right in no time!
