Introduction
In Dutch, we use ‘dat’ and ‘wat’ to connect sentences. They can be tricky, but I will explain them in a simple way!
Wat
We use ‘wat’ when we talk about things in general. It means ‘what’ or ‘that which’.
- Example: Alles wat ik lees, is interessant. (Everything that I read is interesting.)
Dat
We use ‘dat’ to refer to specific things. It means ‘that’.
- Example: Het boek dat ik lees, is spannend. (The book that I am reading is exciting.)
When to Use Each
Here is a simple guide:
| Use ‘Wat’ | Use ‘Dat’ |
|---|---|
| For general things | For specific items |
Practice
Try using ‘dat’ and ‘wat’ in your own sentences! Remember:
- If you can substitute it with ‘what’, use ‘wat’.
- If you can refer to a specific noun, use ‘dat’.
